walton on thames Railway Station
ABOUT WALTON ON THAMES RAILWAY STATION
Walton-on-Thames railway station is on the BML1 line between Hersham and Weybridge at 17m6c. It has two used platforms which are adapted to manage 12 car trains and an island platform which has been disused for some years. There are four running rails of which the inner are fast and the outer are mostly stopping interspersed with fast trains. Platforms 1 and 2 are 246m long according to the sectional appendix.
The station is of fairly old construction and the walking route between platforms is via a subway. The subway also allows gated access to the disused island platforms. The subway has trunking to connect platforms but the capacity could not be determined.
Much of the station platform canopy area is served by high level trunking, however this could not be ascertained if there was any spare capacity.
The SISS room is located on platform 1 in the same location as the Mains intake for the station but access could not be gained as the staff could not locate the key.
The SISS on the station consists of ANDUS on both platforms and portrait LED NTI displays in the booking hall area.
ACCESS/EGRESS
Access to both platforms are via the road entrances and are connected by a subway. Access to the disused middle platform area is accessed via the subway.
There are 250 parking spaces at the station of which most are council run parking. At the rear of the station there are approximately 15 spaces on Network Rail property.
NEAREST NODE/JUNCTION
The nearest node is located on the disused platforms in the middle of the station (the video footage is not correct on this)..
Fibre Node 2108 @ 17m66y
NODE INTERCONNECTION OPTIONS
The node cabinet on the disused platforms was not accessible during this survey.
The node (2108) located on the disused platforms can be access via a gate in the subway which currently has trunking along the side of the walls. This trunking looks aged and with the signs of water ingress this would not be ideally suitable. New water tight trunking would be recommended for this and cable pulled to the SISS equipment location on platform 1. This equipment room was not accessed as no staff had the key but it is suspected to have adequate room to loacte additional equipment.
No second route has been suggested as there is no other viable course.
RISK MATRIX CHECKLIST |
NOTES & RISKS |
Equipment room suitable for node |
The room was not surveyed as the station staff were unable to locate the key to the room |
Internal/external housing required |
Internal |
Station trunking suitable |
Some supplementary work required to interconnect to routes toward the node. |
External ducting segregated |
It appeared that the power ran down platform 2 and the data down platform 1 which would suggest segregation. |
External ducting clear/roped/accessible |
Unknown, assume rodding and roping will be required particularly from the platform 1 extension to the SISS equipment room. |
Power supply suitable |
Although ET&I unavailable the mains electrical intake is located in the same room as the SISS equipment. |
ET&I records obtained |
No entry gained to room. |
Power supply residual issues from ET&I |
Unlikely but subject to ET&I documentation |
Vandalism issues |
None advised by station staff. |
SSSI issues |
None advised by station staff. |
Other environmental issues e.g. rodents |
None advised by station staff. |
Existing support structures suitable |
SISS equipment utilise standard fixings. |
Existing guttering and drainage suitable |
There does not appear to be any canopy drainage issues, however there does seem to be an excess of moisture in the subway which would require attention. |
Listed building / heritage issues |
None advised by station staff. |
Noise abatement issues |
None advised by station staff. |
Pedflow and changes of function |
None advised by station staff. |
Issues left behind by previous projects |
None advised by station staff. |
Issues with exit from station to lineside |
Possible ducting required to lineside as capacity not confirmed and some supplementary work to existing route. |
Any local issues, affecting subsequent work |
Sizeable car park at station, Parking is council run but there are a small number of spaces located on Network Rail land. |

SUMMARY
For the purposes of maintenance, and what would look to be a less problematic cable run, look to interconnect at the node ODF, on the disused middle platforms through the subway to the SISS room on platform 1.
